Maggie Simpson, Director General of Rail Freight Group – highlights from the conference at RSN 2019

The second speaker at RSN’s conference was Maggie Simpson of the Rail Freight Group.

Maggie discussed the position of the Rail Freight Group as the representative body of UK rail freight and outlined its ongoing aim to increase the volume of goods moved by rail.

She described the current position of the rail freight sector today including its major routes, operators and customers, and provided some eye-opening statistics on the significant economic benefits the sector brings to the UK, which total £1.7bn.

Maggie also analysed the current market share of sectors which transport goods using rail freight, highlighting intermodal and construction as the two largest sectors, with both seeing continued growth.

She explored some of the issues facing rail freight at present and in the future, including decarbonisation, digital planning tools, the use of duel fuelling freight locomotives and wireless condition monitoring, amongst others.
