An exciting opportunity has presented itself, which will see a successful candidate join a busy Strategic Sales team, supporting all pre-contract activity within the business. The successful candidate would be responsible for the sales performance of the business, owning and managing corporate relationships and defining and implementing strategies to achieve planned growth in both new and existing markets.

The company we are working with have very established markets in the High Speed and Conventional Rail industries and are looking to grow their market share in Environmental Service and Infrastructure.

Currently working on some of the UK’s most high-profile rail engineering projects with key clients and stakeholders, our client has ambitious plans to grow their market share in Conventional Rail and promote existing capability in Environmental Services and Infrastructure (specifically Highways)

As Bid Manager, your primary role will be to achieve targets for growth. The successful candidate will work with the Strategic Sales team to support all aspects of sales activity, including business development, marketing and tendering.

Key responsibilities and measures of this role include:

  • Develop the opportunities against which to submit proposals, judging pricing, resource levels, area of activity, etc. to ensure that SYSTRA Limited’s business remains focused, of high quality and profitable and achieves the desired market positioning.
  • Engage with clients on each opportunity to ensure thorough understanding of their current and future needs.
  • Review preliminary bid documents to recommend go/no go decisions in line with our business strategy to maximise the probability of success.
  • Lead the bidding process for identified engineering opportunities and bids ensuring all contractual and technical conditions are understood.
  • Engage with the broader UK and Group organisation to develop close working relationships and leverage joint technical capability.
  • Create and maintain a register of new opportunities and look for ways to build on current business successes – provide KPI’s and reports as needed.
  • Write key elements of the bid responses with assistance from colleagues as needed and ensuring commercial requirements and risks are considered and mitigated.
  • Accurate and timely business performance reporting on a monthly basis.
  • Champion continuous improvement through lessons learnt for future bids/proposals and by engaging with SYSTRA Group’s ‘Bid Excellence’ team.
  • Regarding the UK engineering/rail market: Responsible for the Health, Safety and Wellbeing requirements of bids as required by Link Up approval, UK and international law.
  • Promote and sustain a constructive, supportive and collaborative working relationship with clients, external and internal, immediate and senior management and other work colleagues.

Required Experience:

  • Proven track record of successful bid delivery with a sound understanding of commercial and contract terms.
  • Experienced in contract negotiations in the engineering/rail/consultancy sectors.
  • Ability to understand client needs and translate these into concrete technical solutions.
  • Degree in relevant subject (desirable not essential)
  • Interest in and/or knowledge of the transport sector
  • Understanding of the basics of sales, marketing and tendering
  • Excellent knowledge and practical experience of Microsoft Office
  • Excellent communication skills and collaboration skills are absolutely essential for the role
  • Ability to work as a member of cross-cultural teams in different time zones
  • Ability to make decisions in a time-pressured situation
  • Professional approach with the ability to motivate others
  • Good engineering and technical knowledge and the willingness and ability to learn quickly
  • Self-motivated with excellent personal time management skills
