The provision of compliant welfare facilities on infrastructure projects has for years plagued principal contractors due to the ever-changing locations and availability of land available, this along with the previously limited choice of facilities means that no longer does one piece of kit tick all the boxes.
More emphasis has been placed on the suitability of facilities by Network Rail, meaning that as well as having to comply with legislation, welfare facilities now must consider the environment, lineside neighbours and promote the health and wellbeing of the staff on site.
At Rail Live, 8point 8 will be showcasing its latest version of the popular Mobile Welfare Unit (MWU), and the Mobile Toilet Unit (MTU). These road towable units were specifically designed for the rail market and offer a number of unique features designed to complement the demands of Rail sites.
The MWU is HSE compliant for up to 10 individuals with its main power coming from a Solar/PV battery system, for silent operation, but with the peace of mind of a back-up generator to keep the batteries topped up when required. The high security design features on board facilities includes blown hot air heating, hot running water, Kettle, microwave along with sockets and USB charging points. The units have a separate toilet and drying room. 8point8 have added a number of additional features to these units, these included a fully integrated CCTV system, the possibility to add a satellite broadband communication package and full external lighting, all powered from within the unit.
The MTU was launched at last year’s Rail Live and was developed as an alternative to chemical toilets that have been traditionally deployed on infrastructure sites. The unit is road towable and with its onboard waste and freshwater tanks, can easily provide adequate facilities on infrastructure projects. As with the MWU’s it is powered by the same Solar PV system again with a generator backup, and is equipped with Blown hot air heating, hot water and 12v lighting.
Sam Plumbe, Head of Sales, said: “It’s the perfect solution for mobile site access on railway projects, working seamlessly next to, within station car parks or trackside.8point8 were approached by a principal contractor to offer a solution to reduce the number of welfare related close calls that were raised on infrastructure projects. To combat this 8point8 supplied trained welfare managers, who are deployed to site to manage the facilities, ensuring that the facilities are maintained to the highest standards through the whole possession, cleaning and replenishing consumables as required, taking away the stress of managing them by the principal contractors.”
